Fire Up Your Grill for Healthy Grins

May is National Barbecue Month. So, now’s the ideal time to make your grilling game plan. Whether you’ll be heating up a grill on your patio, at the park, at the lake – or on your trusty tailgate – adding this healthy and delicious fare to your grilling menu will bring a smile to the face of every cookout connoisseur! 

Reel in Your Main Course

Make grilled fish the star for your main course. Salmon, albacore tuna and Alaskan halibut are popular and nutritious options for grilling. Plus, these fish are great sources of essential fatty acids, known as omega-3. A study published in the Journal of American Dietetic Association in 2010 found that higher intakes of omega-3 fatty acids were associated with a reduced risk of gum disease.   

Take the Garden to the Grill 

We all know that vegetables are good for our bodies and our teeth. But, have you discovered how amazing they taste when served fresh off the grill? 

Zucchini, squash and onions are just a few of the many veggies that are great for grilling. For a tasty and easy hors d’oeuvre, slice grilled zucchini and then wrap it around a spoonful of goat cheese. 

For a healthy side that even kids will love, serve up some tempting grilled carrots. 

Barbecue a Delightful Dessert

For a scrumptious and light dessert, grill juicy chunks of fresh pineapple or apples on skewers, and serve them with your favorite yogurt and a sprinkle of aromatic cinnamon to round out your healthful barbecue menu.
