Mastering Dental Anxiety with the Power of Music

Fear about visiting the dentist is common. And for many, the sounds of the dentist office can be the unnerving trigger. So, how can patients feel more comfortable during their time with the dentist? With a fantastic playlist, of course.

The American Dental Association recommends patients listen to music in the dentist office as a form of distraction. In fact, a combination of music and an anesthetic during dental procedures can reduce the patients’ blood pressure and pulse rate more than an anesthetic alone. It has also been noted that patients who listen to music at the dentist office tend to have lower levels of stress-related hormones.

While patients can bring their own iPod or mp3 player filled with their favorite tunes, already having a great mix of music playing in the dental office can be just as helpful. We normally focus on patients with our blog, but today we would like to give a few tips to staff members at dental offices as well – to help all patients feel more comfortable in the dental chair.

Striking the Perfect Note with Music for Your Dental Practice

  • Consider a conducting a survey and use a playlist submitted by patients. Why not engage your patients by sending out an email survey asking what radio stations they listen to and what kind of music they like. Better yet, post a survey on your practice’s Facebook page for patients to vote on favorite songs. Create a custom Pandora or Spotify station from the winner.
  • Give thought to investing in a music system where you can give each patient headphones to wear while being treated – and let them adjust the volume as they wish. The headphones will help diminish the noise of drills and other sounds that may be unsettling to some patients.
  • Be considerate of patients and fellow staff members when setting the music volume on a sound system that can be heard by everyone in your office. Setting the level at a happy medium will be appreciated by all.

Leveraging the universal power of music can help your patients and you as dental care providers interact in healthy harmony together during every visit.

What are your favorite sounds to hear when you visit the dentist? We’d love to get your feedback as a comment, a post on our Facebook wall or tweet.
