Chewing Tobacco: Facts About Dip

This year marks the 50th anniversary of the 1964 Surgeon General Report – the one that spoke on the health hazards of smoking, thereby saving the lives of many Americans.

Today, smoking rates have dropped by 59%, indicating a positive change in society.

However, the tobacco industry continues to throw ‘smarter’ baits into the market.

In 2006, the latest year for which information is available, the five largest cigarette manufacturers spent a total of $12.49 billion – or over $34 million dollars a day – to promote and advertise their products. It’s easier to fall prey to their products like dip, chew or spit tobacco, when it is advertised as ‘smokeless’ and ‘healthier’ than cigarettes. One must realize that smokeless tobacco is TOBACCO, and a KILLER in disguise!

What Is Dip?

  • Dip is chewing tobacco, which can also be called smokeless tobacco, spit, snuff, chew and pinch.
  • Dip, which is sold dry or moist in pouches and cans, is used by placing the content between the gums and cheek or the lower lip. This allows the tissues of the mouth absorb the nicotine.

Using dip causes:

  • Nicotine addiction
  • Cancer of the mouth, gums, cheek, tongue, throat, esophagus, stomach and pancreas
  • Strokes, heart diseases and heart attacks
  • Leukoplakia
  • Dental disorders like abrasion or loss of teeth, gingivitis, bad breath, stained teeth and tooth decay

Ways to Quit Smokeless Tobacco:

  • Decide to quit – it is as bad as cigarettes and cigars and has serious consequences to your health.
  • Make a plan. You may reduce the quantity, or switch over to products with lower nicotine content, and gradually quit.
  • Choose a day when you will totally quit, and start executing the necessary steps to reach your goal.
  • Ensure that your near and dear ones are informed of your plan to quit; they can support you and help you overcome any withdrawal symptoms. 

Though it is tough quitting tobacco, the task isn’t impossible. So, next time you feel like chewing, chew a sugarless gum instead. It’s less expensive and better for your teeth and your health.
