It’s National Breast Cancer Awareness Month and that means pink is everywhere. Pink ribbons will be displayed around our state, the Chiefs and Rams will wear pink gloves and cleats and there will be many walks with seas of pink.

As a sign of solidarity, this display of pink is a reminder of the commitment to prevent and treat breast cancer, and to support those courageously battling this disease.

We have come far in recent decades in the prevention, early detection, and treatment of breast and many other cancers. Still, this year, hundreds of thousands of women will be diagnosed with breast cancer.

It is important to understand the risks and precautions associated with breast cancer. Some risk factors, like obesity, are avoidable. Other factors, like family history, are not avoidable, but knowledge of them can help inform medical decisions. Taking protective steps like getting regular check-ups, maintaining a healthy body weight and balanced diet, and exercising may help lower the chances of developing breast cancer.

Today, we urge you to make an appointment for a mammogram and talk to your doctors about breast cancer. For more information, visit to learn more about symptoms, diagnosis, and treatment.
