Are You Ready for Some FOOTBALL?!?

Football season is fast approaching! The Rams and Chiefs have their final pre-season game tonight and Mizzou starts their season on Saturday. With the pigskin in the air, little ones are probably out and about trying to be the next Kurt Warner. So, before they head out to practice, we want to remind you of some important safety items:

Anyone who participates in a sport where there’s a risk of falling or having head contact with another player should wear a mouthguard.

  • This includes sports such as football, basketball, hockey, baseball, soccer, bicycling, skateboarding and gymnastics.
  • A mouthguard helps absorb the shock from a blow to the face that might otherwise result in an injury to the mouth or jaw.
  • A mouthguard also can protect the soft tissues of your cheek lining, tongue and lips.
  • It can limit the risk for chipped or broken teeth, internal damage to a tooth, tooth loss, and even a broken jaw.

There are clearly some good reasons to wear protective mouthguards, but convincing your children to wear them may not be an easy task. A couple of hints:

  • Show them photos of their favorite professionals wearing mouthguards and talk to them about why mouthguards are important and how they are just like the other pads and gear that they wear.
  • Choose the mouthguard with your child. Let them chose the pink one or the tri-color version that allows them to express themselves.
  • Make sure the mouthguard you get fits their mouth well. Bad fitting mouthguards can be awkward and uncomfortable.

So, now that the little ones are all protected…. let’s get ready for some football.
